Record Sunshine and Record Low Rainfall in Buxton
Spring 2025 in Buxton has been defined by two remarkable weather phenomena — exceptional sunshine and an unprecedented dry spell. From April into early May, the region has enjoyed warm, bright days that stand out even across my own personal records at home and long-term historical data from the Met Office Buxton Slopes Station, compiled by our archivist and fellow Slopes Weather Team member, Meg Fowler.
Sunshine Highlights
Over the past few months, Buxton experienced unusually high levels of sunshine. Notably, the combined sunshine hours from February through April reached 470 hours—a dramatic increase from the 187 hours recorded during the same period in 2024. This surplus of sunlight accompanied a series of warm days, including a maximum shade temperature of 24°C recorded on Thursday, May 1st at the Buxton Slopes Station. Furthermore, April's average temperature was 9.9°C, marking the second highest for that month in 25 years of personal weather records.
The Dry Spell
While the record sunshine brought warmth, it also set the stage for an exceptional drought. Buxton received only 33mm (1.3 inches) of rainfall through March and April. In stark contrast, the corresponding period in 2024 saw TEN TIMES the rainfall - 322mm (nearly 13 inches) of rain!
A deeper look into our historical records — maintained on the Met Office Slopes site which covers over 165 years of data (dating back to around 1860)—further underscores the significance of these figures. Gerard Walsh, a local meteorology enthusiast, and the recently retired Head of Geography at St Thomas More School, remarked on the extraordinary dryness. Using data from the Buxton Slopes site, Gerard noted that the February–March–April 2025 period, with an accumulated rainfall of just 78.3mm, is the driest three-month period on record since records began! Equally striking are the very few comparable occurrences:
June, July, August 1976: 80.9mm
February, March, April 1929: 82.5mm
May, June, July 2018: 94.6mm
May, June, July 1921: 96.2mm
These figures not only highlight the severity of the current dry spell but also raise concerns about future water availability, as persistent dryness may well lead to water shortages and measures such as hosepipe bans in the Summer.
The twin phenomena of record sunshine and low rainfall present a mixed bag of implications:Agricultural Impact: For growers of crops like British strawberries and tomatoes, the abundant sunshine is beneficial. However, the significant deficit in rainfall poses challenges for farmers who rely on regular rainfall

Mostly dry and largely sunny conditions are expected to continue for the vast majority over the next several days as a slow-moving area of high pressure remains dominant. It will continue to be warm or very warm for many, especially in the west, but it will be remain cooler in the east, especially along coasts, with some coastal areas seeing persistent low cloud at times, accompanied by a brisk breeze off the North Sea. There is an increasing chance that conditions will turn more unsettled from late next week though, as areas of rain and strengthening winds threaten from the west and/or south (the latter bringing a risk of thunderstorms). This would most likely to be accompanied by temperatures dropping nearer to average for the time of year.
Wednesday 28 May - Wednesday 11 Jun
The start of the period may see some more in the way of rain and showers across much of the UK, especially western parts. Fine and dry weather is more likely to prevail towards the south and east though and may start to develop more widely, but occasional spells of rain and showers are still possible, with the potential for thunderstorms on some days. Overall, temperatures will most likely be around or above normal for the time of year....................................
